Pathogen Testing (Sepsis)
The pathogen tests offered
by Anagnostics support the microbiology investigation because they permit
information about the pathogen to be obtained very early on from whole blood.
This is particularly the case with microorganisms which
grow only slowly or with difficulty in microbiological nutrient media.
Sepsis develops when
bacteria, fungi or viruses are present in the blood stream. Early detection is
decisive for successful treatment by the effective use of antibiotics, antimycotics,
supportive medications and other measures. In that situation the multiplex technology is ideal for covering a broad spectrum of possible pathogens.
Sample Matrices and Test Portfolio
DNA extracted from whole blood is used for the tests. The product MolYsis produced by the Molzym GmbH (www.molzym.com) is recommended. However, the test can also be carried out with DNA extracted from other sample matrices such as pre-cultures, joint fluids, heart-valve fluids or smears.
- Test suitable for both gram-negative- and gram-positive bacteria
- Test suitable for fungi
- Test for resistance to antibiotics (in development)
The test portfolio is being extended to correspond with the development of sepsis therapy.
